How can the reading of Ibn Abbas in Surat Al-A'raf: "And He will forsake you and your God" (ويذرك وإلاهتك) be reconciled with the common reading: "And He will forsake you and your gods" (ويذرك وآلهتك)?

The reading (وَإِلَاهَتَكَ - and your worship) is anomalous, while the mutawatir (concurrently transmitted) reading is (وَيَذَرَكَ وَآلِهَتَكَ - and leave you and your gods) with an open and extended alif. Ibn Jarir al-Tabari mentioned that the reading of the major cities (amsar) is "wa ālihatak" meaning: Moses abandoning the worship of Pharaoh and the worship of his gods. It is narrated from Ibn Abbas and Mujahid the reading (وَيَذَرَكَ وَإِلَاهَتَكَ - and leave you and your worship) with a broken alif, meaning: and leave you and your servitude. The reading adopted by the reciters of the major cities is the correct one, due to the consensus of the authoritative scholars on it.
