Mere ill-treatment from his family does not justify her refusal if he provides her with an independent dwelling. Refusal without a legitimate Shariah justification is considered nushooz (disobedience), which forfeits her right to maintenance unless she is pregnant. If the refusal is due to a legitimate Shariah justification and the husband does not provide for her, this permits her to go out and earn her maintenance.
