What is the ruling on a married woman perfuming herself with her husband's permission when she goes to work or to social events?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The husband's permission to his wife is not valid in a matter that Allah has not permitted. A woman going out perfumed and displaying her adornments (tabarruj) is forbidden by Islamic law, as evidenced by the Almighty's saying: "And abide in your houses and do not display yourselves as [was] the display of the former times of ignorance." And in the hadith: "If a woman perfumes herself and passes by a gathering, she is such and such — meaning an adulteress." Scholars have considered this act to be among the major sins.
