If the water used for ritual bathing () after a state of ritual impurity () has been mixed with soap, it is not sufficient for the ghusl, even if the person performing the ghusl intends it as such. This is because, with this mixture, the water ceases to be pure (tahoor). Pure water (al-ma' al-tahoor) is that which remains in its original state of creation, without any of its three characteristics (color, smell, taste) being altered by a pure substance. This is the view of the majority of jurists and is the most prudent for one's religious accountability. Therefore, whoever wishes to use soap should do so either before or after performing the ghusl with pure water.
