What is the ruling of Islamic law on the removal of a healthy breast to avoid the possibility of it being afflicted with cancer in the future, and what is the impact of reliance upon Allah in such cases?
Firstly: It is not permissible to amputate a healthy limb from the body due to the possibility of it being affected by a future illness, because that constitutes an aggression against the creation of Allah.
Secondly: If the breast is afflicted with cancer and cannot be treated except by mastectomy, then its removal is permissible out of the necessity to prevent the spread of the disease.
Thirdly: It is permissible to perform a surgical operation to implant an artificial breast in place of the removed one, in accordance with the resolution of the International Islamic Fiqh Academy, which permits necessary and needful cosmetic surgery to restore the shape and function of body organs, correct congenital or accidental defects, and remove deformities that cause harm.
