What should I do about my desire to marry a shaykh with whom I connected online, given my fear of his reaction and rejection, and how will my family react if he agrees and they learn of our communication?
It is not permissible for a woman to speak with non- men unless there are Islamic guidelines. It is advised not to rush into marriage with a man known through the internet. If there is a desire for marriage, one must inquire about his religion and character from trustworthy individuals, then perform Istikharah (prayer for guidance), after which the woman may offer herself to him. If the marriage facilitates, there is good in it. If it does not materialize, it might be a diversion from harm, for Allah knows best the outcomes, as He states: "And it may be that you dislike a thing which is good for you and that you like a thing which is bad for you. But Allah knows, and you do not know."
