What is the ruling on unofficial marriage, which is intended to test the wife and ascertain her conduct and intentions?
Marriage is considered Islamically valid if it fulfills the conditions of a sound marriage, whether it is documented or not, and the woman is thereby considered a wife. Delaying its documentation does not affect the establishment of the marital bond. It is not advisable to delay consummating the marriage with the woman to test her behavior. Rather, a man should entrust his affair to Allah and supplicate with what the Prophet (peace be upon him) guided: "O Allah, I ask You for the good of her and the good of what You have instilled in her nature, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of her and the evil of what You have instilled in her nature." Testing her might lead to failure and divorce.
