Is the deprivation of childbearing and the death of fetuses due to a woman's failure to fulfill a vow to fast for an entire month in exchange for being concealed from illegitimate pregnancy? Is it permissible to pay monetary expiation instead of fasting due to study and work circumstances? Is it obligatory to fast vows consecutively? Should she continue fasting if she becomes pregnant?

A woman must repent for praying for the fetus's death. A vow is only binding if it is made in a صيغة (form) that indicates commitment. If it is binding, she must fast for one month intermittently, unless she intended continuous fasting. The continuity is not broken by an excuse if she resumes fasting immediately after the excuse is gone. The hardship of fasting does not nullify its obligation, and expiation is only permissible for someone who is completely and irrecoverably unable to fast. In such a case, an expiation for an oath (kaffarat yamin) is sufficient. Failing to fulfill a vow while being able to do so is a sin that may expose the person to punishment, such as being deprived of children.
