The Mu'tazilah were an Islamic sect that emerged during the Umayyad era and flourished during the Abbasid era. They prioritized reason over transmitted texts and afflicted people with their beliefs. Their doctrine was founded on five principles: Tawhid (Oneness of God), Al-Adl (Justice), Al-Wa'd wal-Wa'id (Promise and Threat), Al-Manzilah bayna al-Manzilatayn (Intermediate Position), and Al-Amr bil-Ma'ruf wal-Nahy 'anil-Munkar (Enjoining Good and Forbidding Evil). Islamic scholars, including Abu al-Hasan al-Ash'ari, Imam Ahmad, and Ibn Taymiyyah, refuted their views. Some contemporaries attempt to revive this ideology under new names such as rationalism and enlightenment. The most dangerous aspect of this is their attempt to alter definitive Sharia rulings, such as the punishment for apostasy, Jihad, legal punishments (Hudud), divorce, inheritance, and the hijab. It is advisable to consult books that have exposed their ideas, such as: "Muhammad Amarah in the Balance of Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah" by Sulaiman al-Kharashi, "The Modernists: The Mu'tazilah of Today" by Yusuf Kamal, "The Modernists" by Muhammad al-Nasser, and "The Modern Rationalist School and its Connection to the Ancient One" by Nasser al-Aql. It is recommended to shun them if one is unable to debate them.
