What is the nature of an Islamic wedding and how did the Companions conduct their weddings? Was there a betrothal (khitbah) before marriage in the era of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him? And what are the appropriate questions that can be asked to a prospective spouse?

Marriage began with the man looking at the woman; if she pleased him, he would propose to her, otherwise he would leave her, according to the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) saying: "If one of you proposes to a woman, and he is able to look at what would encourage him to marry her, then let him do so." There was no specific duration set between engagement and marriage, and it seems that it took place without delay. If the contract was concluded, a celebration was held to publicize it with the duff (tambourine) and singing that was not lewd, according to the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) saying: "Did you send a girl with her to play the duff and sing?" There is no need for questions during the engagement, for what matters is the woman's conduct, her religiosity, and her character, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "So win the one who is religious."
