Scholars differ on the obligatory nature of the niqab, and the preponderant opinion is that it is obligatory. Obedience to parents is not valid in disobedience to the Creator, so it is not permissible to obey them in their command not to wear the niqab. The jurisprudential ruling should be explained to them with wisdom and gentleness. However, if wearing the niqab results in harm from the parents, then there is no objection to adopting the opinion of those who permit uncovering the face and hands, provided that temptation is secure, in order to avert harm and hardship.
