Is it true that the Prophet, may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him, said to Mu'awiyah, "Depart from me; I smell from you the scent that your son will kill Al-Husayn"?

Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan was a Companion and a scribe of revelation, and no صحيح (authentic) narration from the Prophet, peace be upon him, denounces him. All that has been narrated to that effect is false. As for Yazid ibn Mu'awiyah, it has not been established that he killed Husayn or ordered his killing. Rather, the army he sent to prevent him from going to Iraq killed him, and Yazid showed his pain over this and honored his household. He does not bear the sin of his killing, if it occurred. Nor does a father bear the sin of his son, for Allah, the Almighty, says: "And no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another."
