How can a suitor test the suitability of his fiancée, and are there suggested questions for choosing a fiancée?

He asks about the fiancée’s religiosity, character, and beauty. If he is overwhelmingly inclined to marry her, he may request to see her in the presence of one of her mahrams, while knowing that she is still a stranger to him until the marriage contract is concluded. He is warned against the widespread leniency in some Muslim countries concerning the khalwah (private seclusion) of the suitor with his fiancée, under the pretext of getting to know each other. As for the suggested questions, he should ask her about the extent of her commitment to Allah’s religion in her dress, going out, coming in, and all her affairs. He may be satisfied with discerning this from her general demeanor.
