If the value of trade goods reaches the (85 grams of gold) and a full year has passed over them, becomes obligatory at a rate of a quarter of a tenth of their value. The merchant must ascertain the value of what he owns at the beginning of each Hijri year and pay the zakat for each year. If he is in straitened circumstances, the zakat remains an obligation upon him and must be paid whenever he is able to do so.
