What is the ruling of the Shari'ah concerning someone who prevented the establishment of a mourning gathering for his stepmother, assuming that this would be a cover for her due to her frequent outings to markets, believing that her family would not stand by her, only to be surprised by their complete attendance on the day of her death, and by this action caused a rift between himself and his relatives? Is he sinful of cutting off ties of kinship, even though he knows he is under the influence of obsessive-compulsive disorder?

A Muslim should beware of lying, ill-suspicion, and doubting others, as supported by the verse: ﴿O YOU WHO HAVE BELIEVED, AVOID MUCH [NEGATIVE] ASSUMPTION. INDEED, SOME ASSUMPTION IS SIN. AND DO NOT SPY OR BACKBITE ONE ANOTHER. WOULD ONE OF YOU LIKE TO EAT THE FLESH OF HIS BROTHER WHEN DEAD? YOU WOULD DETEST IT. AND FEAR ALLAH; INDEED, ALLAH IS ACCEPTING OF REPENTANCE AND MERCIFUL.﴾ [Al-Hujurat: 12], and the Hadith: "Beware of suspicion, for suspicion is the most untruthful of speech."

One must also accustom oneself to a sound heart and good suspicion of Muslims, for this is among the best acts of obedience. An example of this is the story of the man from the people of Paradise who found no deceit in himself towards any Muslim and envied no one for good.

Lying and ill-suspicion can be remedied by repenting to Allah, improving relations with family, maintaining kinship ties, increasing acts of righteousness and goodness, remembering Allah, and seeking refuge in Him from Satan.
