Uqbah ibn Nafi' al-Fihri was one of the great commanders and conquerors in early Islam. He was born one year before the Hijrah. He participated in the conquest of Egypt and Africa with Amr ibn al-'As, who appointed him over Barqa. Then, Mu'awiyah appointed him over Africa, where he built the city of Kairouan and its mosque. During the reign of Yazid, Uqbah returned to govern the Maghreb and continued his conquests until he reached the Atlantic coast. He was martyred in the Maghreb in 63 AH. Among his descendants are Yusuf ibn Abd al-Rahman and Abd al-Rahman ibn Habib.
