Lying is a major sin and not among the characteristics of the people of faith. Therefore, it is obligatory to beware of it and adhere to truthfulness. Mingling with people is religiously desirable, and one can offer compliments using general phrases that do not involve lying. To avoid lying, remember the greatness of Allah, the gravity of lying, and the virtue of truthfulness. The basic principle is to adhere to truthfulness with one's spouse, unless harm is feared, in which case the permits lying to preserve good relations, provided it does not lead to the loss of any of his rights.
