Is it permissible for a teacher of the Noble Qur’an to take a wage for his work?

Scholars have differed on the ruling of taking payment for teaching the Qur’an: The early Hanafis and Hanbalis held the view that it is not permissible, while the Shafi’is, Malikis, Zahiris, and later Hanafis held the view that it is permissible. The latter view is closer to the truth, and it is supported by the hadith: “Indeed, the most deserving thing for which you take payment is the Book of Allah.” As for taking sustenance from the public treasury (Bayt al-Mal), endowments (awqaf), or unconditional gifts, there is no disagreement on its permissibility. Therefore, there is no harm in taking payment from charitable organizations for teaching the Qur’an, while being mindful of the intention, making the primary aim the dissemination of good and knowledge.
