Is it considered an injustice for a mother to refuse to marry her daughter to a young man of good character and religious commitment because his origin is not Bahraini, knowing that the daughter is 24 years old, works, and is content to marry him? And are her brothers considered unjust to her for not disobeying their mother in this decision?
The guardian is obligated to marry off the girl if she requests marriage to a suitable man, religiously and morally; otherwise, he would be considered an adil (one who withholds marriage). As for the mother, she has no guardianship. If the suitor is acceptable, the mother should not reject him or incite the guardians to withhold marriage. The girl should try to convince her mother or seek mediation from someone who can convince her. If none of the guardians are convinced, she may refer the matter to the judge to marry her off. However, if the suitor is unacceptable, the girl must obey her mother and sever any illicit relationship, while being warned about the severity of disobeying parents, for Allah Almighty says: "And your Lord has decreed that you shall not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [even] 'uff,' and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word. And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, 'My Lord, have mercy upon them as they nurtured me when I was small.'"
