The last sermon delivered by Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz was a reminder of the Hereafter, in which he emphasized that humanity was not created in vain and would return to Allah for accountability, and that the loser is he who is deprived of Paradise. He warned that security tomorrow belongs to him who feared today and exchanged the ephemeral for the enduring, noting that people follow in the footsteps of the perishing, and that the dead are buried in the earth, held hostage by their deeds. He concluded his sermon by calling for piety towards Allah before it is too late, and he wept, causing those around him to weep. In another narration, he mentioned that he did not know anyone with more sins than he knew for himself, and that these were Allah's just laws, and he sought forgiveness and wept until his beard became wet, and he did not return to his assembly until he died.
