Does divorce take effect in my case after I divorced my wife verbally, then in writing via WhatsApp, knowing that she uttered offensive words about my mother?
Severe anger does not prevent a divorce from taking effect unless one's intellect is removed. Therefore, if you uttered the divorce to your wife while aware of what you were saying, your first divorce has taken effect. If you only wrote the second divorce and doubted the intention of divorce with that writing, the preponderant opinion is that it has not taken effect, because writing is a metaphor (kinayah) that requires intention, and divorce does not occur with doubt in it or in its condition. Certainty dictates the continuity of the marriage. It is obligatory for both spouses to live together honorably, and for the wife to obey her husband in what is good and not to harm him.
