Is it permissible to subscribe to non-mandatory home insurance to reduce the cost of mandatory car insurance?
Commercial insurance is forbidden because it involves gharar (excessive uncertainty/risk) and consuming people's wealth unlawfully. However, if a person is forced into it and finds no alternative, then in this case, the sin of participating in it is lifted, and they are considered to be under duress. As for voluntary insurance, it is not permissible to participate in it as long as the person is not forced, even if it would lead to a reduction in the cost of mandatory insurance. For "averting harms takes precedence over acquiring benefits," and "the attainment of benefit does not justify falling into disobedience." Allah Almighty said: "So fear Allah as much as you are able" [At-Taghabun: 16].
