Are children considered disobedient to their father, thereby warranting their entry into Hellfire, if they refuse to live with him, despite their daily attempts to help him, and after he divorced their mother and used to verbally abuse and threaten them, knowing that the father has retracted his forgiveness of one of them?

Filial piety is one of the greatest obligations after belief in Allah. Allah has commanded kindness to parents and not to abandon or mistreat them, no matter their condition, even if they command polytheism. Allah Almighty says: "But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness." Threatening one's father is not permissible and one must repent from it. It is also not permissible to address him harshly.

The custody of young children belongs to the mother, while older children are given a choice between the father and the mother. Children have the right to choose to reside with their mother, while being keen to show filial piety to their father and treat him with kindness by visiting him, checking on his well-being, fulfilling his needs, and obeying him in what is good. If they adhere to Allah's limits in their dealings with him, then his prayers against them or his displeasure with them will not harm them. They should strive to seek his pleasure and advise him gently and politely.
