The answer

The fast of one who backbites is valid according to the majority of scholars, and it has been narrated as a consensus. Only Al-Awza'i differed on this matter. However, backbiting is a grave sin and forbidden, and its prohibition becomes even more severe during fasting, based on the Almighty's saying: "O you who have believed, prescribed for you is fasting as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become righteous" (2:183), and the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Whoever does not abandon false speech, acting upon it, and ignorance, Allah has no need for him to abandon his food and drink."
