The science of Hadith is divided into two sections: Ilm al-Hadith Riwayah (the science of Hadith narration), which is the transmission of the sayings and actions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, along with their precise recording and meticulous wording; and Ilm al-Hadith Dirayah (the science of Hadith understanding), which involves understanding the reality of narration, its conditions, types, and rulings, as well as the status of narrators, their conditions, the categories of narrated reports, and related matters.

The science of Hadith terminology (Ilm Mustalah al-Hadith) is a discipline comprising principles and rules by which the conditions of the isnad (chain of narration) and the matn (text) are known, in terms of acceptance or rejection. Its discussions are manifold and include knowing the types of Hadith, such as Marfu (elevated) and Mawquf (stopped), Sahih (authentic) and Daif (weak), and the sciences of al-Jarh wa al-Tadil (discrediting and accrediting narrators), Ilal (hidden defects), and others.
