Is a female student who travels 55 km to study without a mahram committing a sin?

It is not permissible for a woman to travel without the companionship of a husband or a mahram. If there is a dire need for travel, such as examinations, and the mahram is unable to attend, some jurists permit her to travel for less than a day and a night without a mahram. Some scholars also permit a woman, in cases of necessity, to travel without a mahram if she feels safe. However, the fundamental principle is to prohibit a woman from traveling without a mahram, and therefore, leniency should only be applied when there is a compelling reason and severe hardship.
