How can a human being be a Muslim while committing major sins such as listening to music, severing ties of kinship, disobeying parents, watching pornography, and engaging in aggressions like harassment and violence, and neither praying nor remembering God nor reading the Qur'an, especially when also afflicted by the evil eye, sorcery, and envy? Is he considered an infidel who has committed sins and transgressions? And will God grant him enjoyment and sustenance in this world, then hold him accountable and punish him in the Hereafter?

Sins and transgressions, even major ones, do not expel their perpetrator from the fold of Islam, unless he deems them permissible. Major sins do not entail eternal damnation for their perpetrator in Hellfire if he dies as a monotheist. Rather, he is under the Will of Allah: if He wills, He may forgive him by His grace, and if He wills, He may punish him by His justice, then remove him from Hellfire by His mercy. Exceptions to this are magic and abandoning prayer, concerning which there is a difference of opinion. The proofs for this are numerous, among them that Allah forgives what is less than polytheism, as in His Almighty saying: "Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills," and the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "He will emerge from the Fire whoever said 'There is no god but Allah' and had in his heart the weight of a barley-grain of goodness," and his saying: "There is no servant who said 'There is no god but Allah' and then died upon that except that he entered Paradise, even if he committed adultery and even if he stole." Thus, a sinful monotheist, if he does not repent, Allah may pardon him and admit him to Paradise by His grace, or punish him then bring him forth to Paradise, for eternity in Hellfire is only for disbelievers.
