When is it recommended for the preacher to say "Peace be upon you" to the worshippers on Friday: Is it upon starting to ascend the minbar while still on the ground, or after settling on the minbar and turning his face towards them? And is this issue a matter of scholarly disagreement?

Scholars have differed regarding the permissibility of the Imam greeting the congregants on Friday after ascending the minbar and facing them. The Shafi'is and the majority are of the opinion that it is recommended, citing traditions from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the Companions as evidence. Conversely, the Malikis and Hanafis consider it disliked. The correct view is that it is recommended for the Imam to greet a second time after ascending the minbar, because he would have had his back to the congregants while ascending. As for the first greeting upon entering the mosque and reaching the minbar, there is no disagreement regarding its Sunnah status.
