What is the ruling on saying, "All grace is due to Allah and to the Messenger in everything"?

It is probable that the intention of whoever said, "All favor is for Allah and for the Messenger" could be one of two things: The first is that the favor is for Allah and for the Messenger in knowing the truth and establishing proofs. This meaning is correct, for the Prophet has favor over the Ummah due to his effort and patience. However, it is not prescribed to combine Allah and His Messenger with the conjunction "wa" (and), which may suggest equality. The Prophet forbade this to protect Tawhid (monotheism), so one should say, "What Allah wills, then what so-and-so wills." The second is that one intends that the favor is for Allah and for the Messenger in everything related to matters of religion and this world. This is an equalization that is not valid, because the one who bestows blessings and grants success is Allah alone. If one intends that the Prophet has the power to dispose of the universe by bestowing blessings, this is major shirk (polytheism). If one believes that he does not possess the attributes of Lordship, but the phrase slipped from his tongue out of leniency, then this is minor shirk, from which one must repent.
