Does a young man who was killed innocently, knowing that he dealt in money acquired from drugs, yet prayed and helped people, and perhaps committed fornication, count as a martyr? And what is his ruling?

Many scholars do not consider someone who is unjustly killed to be a martyr; rather, they are washed and prayed over. However, the Hanafis and some Shafi'is and Hanbalis consider him a martyr. Sheikh Ibn Baz favored the view that someone unjustly killed outside of battle is not to be treated like a martyr in battle, citing that Umar, Uthman, and Ali — may Allah be pleased with them — were unjustly killed, yet they were washed and prayed over.
