Is it haram to own free shares in a global oil company – which are feared to deposit money in usurious banks – and sell them immediately?

There is no objection to an employee accepting a bonus from their employer, whether it be in cash, in-kind gifts, or shares. They are not obliged to sell the shares unless they are prohibited, such as shares of usurious banks, gambling houses, or prostitution dens, or if they are mixed shares. Mixed shares are shares of companies that have a permissible activity but deposit a portion of their funds in usurious banks or have usurious debts. Prohibited and mixed shares must not be retained.

The resolution of the Islamic Fiqh Academy stipulates the prohibition of investing in companies that deal with unlawful matters, such as usury. The resolution of the Fiqh Council of the Muslim World League also states the prohibition of investing in companies whose primary purpose is unlawful, and the impermissibility of purchasing shares of companies and banks that deal with usury if the purchaser is aware of it. It also mandates divesting from such shares for anyone who becomes aware of their nature after purchase, because purchasing these shares means the purchaser's participation in dealing with usury.
