What is the ruling on listening to music?

Scholars have unanimously prohibited the use and listening to musical instruments, with the exception of the tambourine (daf) for women during the two Eids and at celebrations, according to the sounder opinion. This is based on the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, saying: "There will be among my Ummah people who will consider unlawful sexual intercourse, silk, alcoholic drinks, and musical instruments."
