Is listening to music forbidden?

It is not permissible to listen to flutes, musical instruments, and musical devices, due to the prohibition by many scholars, who base their ruling on the words of Allah Almighty: "And among the people is he who buys the amusement of speech to mislead [others] from the way of Allah without knowledge and who takes it in ridicule. Those will have a humiliating punishment." [Luqman: 6]. Many scholars have interpreted "amusement of speech" as referring to musical instruments and flutes. They also cite the words of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "There will be among my Ummah people who will consider unlawful sexual intercourse, silk, intoxicants, and musical instruments to be lawful."
