Upon what do I rely regarding those who permitted listening to music or forbade listening to it?

The majority of scholars have stated that music is forbidden, and some have mentioned a consensus on this. They based their arguments on the Quran and Sunnah, including the interpretation of the verse: "And among the people is he who buys idle talk" as referring to musical instruments. Also, the hadith from Bukhari states: "There will be people from my Ummah who will consider unlawful sexual intercourse, silk, wine, and musical instruments as lawful." As for those who permit it, they believe that the texts are not definitive in their meaning or authenticity. Ash-Shawkani narrated from some Companions and Tabi'in that they listened to singing accompanied by instruments. However, those who forbid it cite evidence, including the hadith of Abu Malik and Abu Amir. The evidence presented by those who prohibit it outweighs the evidence of those who permit it.
