Is there a difference of opinion among scholars regarding the ruling on music, and has the majority of scholars not reached a consensus on its prohibition or permissibility? And what is to be said to one who denies the existence of clear evidence for the prohibition of purposeful music, and to one who believes that the prohibition of music based on the evidence from the Quran and Sunnah is merely an opinion?

More than one scholar has related the consensus of the Ummah regarding the prohibition of music, and sound and explicit proofs have been reported to that effect. What has been attributed to some scholars concerning its permissibility is weak and carries no weight. Music is inherently forbidden, and therefore it is prohibited to listen to songs accompanied by it, even if their lyrics are permissible and purposeful. The dispute regarding the prohibition of music is very weak and has not been given much attention by many scholars, and the قول (saying/opinion) that musical instruments are permissible is an odd view and not known to have been held by the followed Imams.
