Slandering a chaste person and causing discord between spouses are among the major sins. The worldly punishment for slander is eighty lashes for the slanderer if the matter is proven before the ruler. However, if a mother slanders her child, she is not subjected to this punishment according to the majority of jurists. A mother's right over her child is not forfeited by her wrongdoing. It is the son's duty to advise his mother gently and explain to her the prohibition of slander and causing discord. He can seek help from religious people, while continuously showing her dutifulness and kindness.
