Scholars have explicitly stated that it is not permissible for a young woman to speak with non-mahram (definition) men without necessity, even if it is merely to offer greetings (salam), due to fear of temptation (fitna). The preponderant view is that offering and returning greetings between the sexes is permissible when there is no fear of temptation and prohibited when there is.
