The answer

The origin of the Hadith is in Sahih Muslim, where the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "On the Day of Resurrection, people from among the Muslims will come with sins like mountains, and Allah will forgive them and place them upon the Jews and Christians."

The meaning of the Hadith is that the believer was exposed to entering Hellfire, but when the disbelievers enter Hellfire due to their disbelief, they become a ransom for the Muslims.

As for placing sins on the Jews and Christians, it means that Allah forgives the sins of the Muslims and removes them from them, and places a like amount upon the Jews and Christians due to their disbelief and sins. Thus, He admits them to Hellfire because of their deeds, not because of the sins of the Muslims, for Allah Almighty says: (And no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another).

It is also possible that what is meant are the evil practices introduced by the disbelievers, which are lifted from the Muslims by Allah's forgiveness, and a like amount is placed upon the disbelievers because they were the ones who introduced them.
