How is the remaining amount for the price of a plot of land paid after the death of both the seller and the buyer: Is it paid at the value requested at that time, or at its value today, knowing that the old value is currently worthless, and the current value is exorbitant and cannot be paid?
The scholars have determined that a debt must be repaid according to its value when the debtor incurred it, not its value at the time of repayment. If the currency in which the debt was denominated still exists, the matter is clear. However, if the currency has ceased to exist and a different one is being used, then the debt's value in the new currency at the time it became due and the old currency ceased to exist is obligatory. One does not revert to valuing the land. Therefore, the heirs of the land seller must be given the remainder of the debt in the agreed-upon currency, or its value in the new currency if the old one no longer exists, while seeking their forgiveness for the delay if there was any procrastination.
