What is the correct legitimate way to follow a funeral procession, and is it better to sit or stand during the burial?

The jurists differed on the ruling of sitting at the grave before the جنازة (bier/coffin) is laid down. The Hanbalis and Hanafis deemed it disliked (makrooh), while the Malikis permitted it, and the Shafi'is made it a matter of choice. However, after the جنازة is laid down, there is no dislike in sitting or standing. Those who advocated for its dislike cited the hadith (definition): "If you follow a funeral procession, do not sit until it is laid down." Conversely, those who permitted it cited thehadith of Al-Bara' bin 'Azib, which indicates the permissibility of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and his companions sitting at the grave before burial.
