Scholars have differed on the ruling concerning someone who is sitting when a funeral procession passes by, holding two views: it is disliked to stand for a passing funeral procession, or it is recommended. The second view cites the hadith: "When you see a funeral procession, stand up for it until it passes you or is laid down."

They also differed on the ruling concerning the mourners remaining standing in the graveyard until the deceased is placed in the grave, holding two views: it is disliked for mourners to sit before the جنازة (bier/coffin) is laid down, or it is disliked to stand. The first view cites the hadith: "If you follow a funeral procession, do not sit until it is laid down."

Some contemporary scholars hold the view that it is recommended to stand for the funeral procession in both cases, based on clear evidence and the absence of proof for abrogation.
