Is it permissible to take out an interest-bearing student loan to cover living expenses and housing rent, given the unavailability of shelter and the inability to secure the necessary funds for it?

Usury (riba) is a major sin and is forbidden in all its forms. Nothing is exempted from this prohibition except in cases of genuine necessity, such as when a person cannot find a place to live except through a usurious loan. The necessity for housing can be met by renting, not by owning. Therefore, if a person cannot find a lawful job that provides them with housing, it is permissible for them to take a usurious loan only to rent a dwelling, as necessity is measured by its extent. Allah Almighty has indeed made exceptions for cases of necessity in other forbidden matters, such as carrion, blood, and pork.
