Linguistically, "al-muda'abah" (foreplay/caressing) means jesting, and its root, "da'aba," means to say something pleasant. Technically, it is gentleness in speech, whether through jesting or otherwise, provided it does not lead to harm; otherwise, it would be mockery. In fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), it is often used to describe the acts that occur between spouses as preludes to intercourse.
