Is it permissible for my mother to break her fast in Ramadan due to her illness and her being affected by the change in medication timing?
The fatwa answers that if it is possible to take medicine while fasting without affecting her health, then the mother must fast after consulting doctors. However, if fasting affects her health or increases her illness, then she is permitted to break her fast, and it may become obligatory if she fears perishing.
If the illness is one from which recovery is hoped, then she must make up the missed fasts whenever she is able to, and feeding the poor is not sufficient in this case. But if the illness is one from which recovery is not hoped, then she must feed one poor person for each day a mudd of food (approximately 750 grams of rice).
