The essence and reality of the soul (ruh) are among the unseen matters whose knowledge Allah Almighty has exclusively reserved for Himself. It is not appropriate to delve into this, as there is no benefit in doing so. In the noble verse: {And they ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning the soul. Say, "The soul is of the affair of my Lord. And you have not been given of knowledge except a little"} [Al-Isra: 85], there is a reprimand for those who delve into the matter of the soul. The wisdom behind this is to demonstrate the incapacity of the intellect to comprehend a creature adjacent to it, indicating that it is even more incapable of comprehending its Creator. Research in this field is futile and offers no benefit in matters of religion or worldly life. Philologists have defined the soul as the very breath by which a living being exists, and its true nature is known only to Allah.
