What is the ruling on preparing food for two or three days after the burial of the deceased and receiving financial contributions from the mourners, and does that change its ruling?

It is not legislated for the family of the deceased to prepare food, whether the money is from the heirs or from a third of the deceased's wealth, because it is contrary to the Sunnah and is considered an added burden on them in their grief. The Sunnah is for food to be prepared and brought to the family of the deceased, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded: "Prepare food for the family of Ja'far, for indeed something has come to them that preoccupies them." The Companions considered gathering at the home of the deceased and preparing food after burial to be a form of lamentation (niyaha). It is disliked for the family of the deceased to prepare food due to the added burden on their affliction and its resemblance to the practices of the pre-Islamic era (Jahiliyyah). Giving money to the family of the deceased and then burdening them with preparing food and gathering in their home does not remove the prohibition, and the belief that this act benefits the deceased is incorrect, because the deceased is harmed by lamentation.
