How is the inheritance divided among 3 sons, a grandson, and a wife?

If the deceased left behind only his wife and his three sons, then the wife receives one-eighth due to the existence of a lineal descendant (heir), as Allah Almighty says: "But if you have a child, then for them [the wives] is one eighth of what you leave" [An-Nisa: 12]. The remainder goes to the three sons by way of ta'sib (residuary inheritance), equally among them, based on the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, saying: "Give the shares of inheritance to those who are entitled to them; and whatever remains is for the closest male." As for the grandson (son's son), he does not inherit because he is excluded by the higher-ranking son. The inheritance is divided into twenty-four shares: the wife receives three shares, and each son receives seven shares.
