How can I pay the zakat on shares I own in a hotel that I recently discovered deals in haraam activities, given that I have not paid zakat on them previously?
The predominant characteristic of hotel operations is a lack of caution regarding the sale of intoxicants and pork, and the sheltering of immoral individuals. Therefore, it is forbidden to purchase shares in these hotels. It is obligatory to dispose of these shares and a proportion of the profits equivalent to the percentage of forbidden activities the hotel engages in, even if approximate, with an emphasis on caution. One must regret what has occurred and resolve not to return to it. As for zakat, it is due on the remaining lawful profits if they reach the nisab (minimum threshold) by themselves or in conjunction with other assets, and a full year has passed since their possession.
