If alcohol is an intoxicant, then it is impure (najis). If it is not intoxicating, then the default status of things is purity (tahara). Determining whether it is intoxicating or not is referred to specialists. The Global Arabic Encyclopedia mentioned some types of alcohol that are classified as poisons, not intoxicants. This is where there is a difference of opinion among jurists regarding the ruling on poison: is it pure or impure? The accepted view among the Hanbalis is that it is impure.
