Divorce issued before purification from postpartum bleeding (nifas) is an innovative (bid‘i) and forbidden divorce, yet it is effective according to the majority of scholars. A woman divorced during nifas does not begin her waiting period (iddah) until she purifies from it, and it does not end until she has experienced three menstrual cycles. Thus, the nifas period is not counted as part of the iddah.
